Sustainable Business: Leading the change
Location: London, England (October 7 - 8, 2010)
A 2-day intensive workshop offered by the United Nations-mandated University for Peace and Ideal Media, focusing on the following core themes:
- Ethical Leadership for Sustainability How can you bring your values to the workplace and develop leadership skills for sustainability? This module will take participants through exercises helping them to 1st identify and then integrate values into everyday business decisions.
- Corporate Responsibility Communications & Stakeholder Engagement This module focuses on engaging and inspiring stakeholders and Corporate Responsibility (CR) reporting and branding. Some subthemes: Mapping stakeholders; Behavioural and organisational change; long-term strategic brand positioning and building brand value through CR.
- Organisational and Behavioural Change Techniques, strategies and case studies to affect change at an individual and organisational level. How to ensure high-level policies are supported by frontline behaviour.
- Cross-Sector Partnerships for Sustainability How can one develop win-win cross-sector partnerships given conflicting values and cultures? This module will explore the principles for developing effective partnerships for sustainability, and illustrate with case studies.
- Microfinance and Social Intrapreneurship The life of a social intrapreneur - how microfinance was born at Morgan Stanley. Challenges for CSR in a downmarket. How banks are developing new business models around microfinance and becoming trusted partners working towards strategic social and environmental goals.
- Social Enterprises This module will explore businesses that are contributing positively to society while being profitable, and analyze what elements are needed to succeed . Sustainability within the public sector will also be explored.
- Sustainability Frameworks This module focuses on the UN Global Compact (the largest voluntary CSR framework) and the Global Reporting Initiative. A case-study format will allow participants implement these frameworks in a medium-sized organisation.
Workshop Format: Each session will feature at least one industry expert. Last year’s speakers included experts from LEAD International, WWF, Serco, Asda and the Co-operative Group. Background reading is required and all participants are asked to bring a real life dilemma to the course.
The course includes a welcome dinner on the first evening and a careers workshop with a leading CR recruitment agency.
Who is the course for? The course is aimed at young professionals with experience or an interest in Corporate Responsibility and sustainability. Enrolment this year is limited again to 24 participants to maximize interaction. Last year’s participants included people from leading universities, blue chip companies, consultancies, the public sector, social enterprises and charities. This make up of the group with differing backgrounds and viewpoints allowed sharing of experiences and passionate discussions.

- Centre for Executive Education: The course will be anchored by Mohit Mukherjee, M. Ed. Harvard Univ.,Director of the UPEACE Centre for Executive Education.
- Ideal Media: Since 2002 Ideal Media has been working in sustainability strategy and communications, working to integrate sustainability with business objectives and brand. Our goal is to support organisations large and small working towards sustainability and engage positively with stakeholders.
