The world is changing at an extremely rapid pace, affecting the essence of how we learn, interact, and work. As educators, we are charged with creating learning experiences to equip our students for a future that is constantly changing. This week-long, on site course is designed for educators working in formal and informal settings, within institutions and in grassroots community contexts. The Earth Charter will be presented and discussed as a unique educational framework for helping build a more sustainable, peaceful and just global community.

  4. Leadership Skills for Educators: Skills relevant to promoting a culture of peace
  5. Education for Sustainable Development: ESD, the Earth Charter and their practical applications
  6. Pura Vida Day: Possible activities include hiking, canopy tour, horseback riding, coffee tours…

Course Format: The course is designed to be practical and hands-on, with space for sharing and reflection. The mornings will be typically spent on the campus of the University for Peace, complemented by afternoon fieldtrips. The course will travel to the most scenic cloud forest region of Monteverde for the last couple of days of the course. Enrollment is limited in order to maximize participant interaction.

All participants will be awarded a certificate from United Nations mandated University for Peace's Centre for Executive Education upon completion of the course.


Objectives: by the end of this course participants will have:
  • Examined the challenges facing educators in light of changes in society, information flows, advancing technologies, and more.
  • Built the knowledge, skills, and perspectives necessary for responding creatively and proactively to the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
  • Been exposed to readings, cases, online resources, frameworks and a growing network of alumni who are engaged in similar endeavors.

Course cost: $2,450 for international participants.
This tuition fee includes all course materials, hotel accommodation, lunches and the transportation. Special rates are available for Costa Rica-based participants, not inclusive of lodging. Please e-mail us to inquire about this special rate.

Who should enroll? Educators at all levels – teachers, university professors, administrators and nonformal educators, are the primary target audience. However, anyone who considers himself or herself an ‘educator’ will benefit tremendously from this week.

Course Facilitator:

Mohit Mukherjee is the Director of the UPEACE Centre for Executive Education and a faculty member at UPEACE where he teaches a variety of courses, including 'Sustainable Development Education' and 'Foundation in Peace and Conflict Studies'. Prior to this position, he led the Education Programme of the Earth Charter Initiative, an international nonprofit organization. He has a Bachelor's degree from Stanford University and his Master's from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Course Location:

The University for Peace is set against the backdrop of the incredibly lush Central Valley of Costa Rica. UPEACE is located in El Rodeo, only 20 minutes from San Jose and 45 minutes from the Pacific Coast. The small town charm and Costa Rican hospitality is an aspect that our participants love and return for. Your visit to Costa Rica will be held in an incredible location with hilltop views of the Central Valley, convenient hiking trails and serene study areas.

The University for Peace is a United Nations charter initiative, which means that the school was created for the specific purpose of educating people about Peace and Conflict Resolutions. Now with over 30 years in existence, the school offers Master’s degrees in a variety of topics ranging from Environmental Studies, Peace Education, Humanitarian Law and Sustainability.
